Prismacolor Over Pencil Test by BoxedSurprise
Prismacolor Over Pencil Test
See that arm in the top-left corner? I just wanted to see if I could prevent smudging of my pencils by first drawing in graphite and then a Prismacolor PC 935 (the Loomis pencil).

Then I drew part of a leg near the bottom, and then well, the pencil started going on it's own.

This is what happens when you worry more about the action of a drawing first than the technical details; things get crazy.

- Copier paper
- Mitsubishi Uni Wooden Pencil [HB]
- Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencil [BLACK PC935]

Rarity and the Siren Manuscript by BoxedSurprise
Rarity and the Siren Manuscript
A work I made for Voice Actress Tabitha St. Germain (who you may know as the voice of Rarity from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Pepper from The Littlest Pet Shop, and Martha from Martha Speaks).

Depicts Rarity from Equestria Girls Rainbow Rocks battling the Siren Aria Blaze.

You can find the work shown here:…

"Rarity's fingers danced along the keys, The Element of Generosity made the Siren flee."

Other Details

- The big 'R' is called an Inhabited Initial (a titled scene or person is called a Historiated Initial)
- "Font" is called Lombardic Capitals
- Inspiration came from the Illuminated Manuscript called Moralia in Job [Details: Initial R with St. George and the Dragon, from the Moralia in Job, Citeaux, France, early twelfth century. Illuminated manuscript, 13 3/4" x 9 1/4". Bibliotheque Municipale, Dijon.]
- Total Work Time: 8 hrs

Methods to Mention

- Got a standard form Lombardic Capital 'R' and using Photoshop, adjusted to size on a template the same size as the watercolour paper which was put on a 8.5 x 11" cartridge paper
- Typed the text according to margin conventions to use as a guide
- After drawing the rough draft, I placed it on top of a piece of paper with one side covered in graphite touching the actual watercolour paper and traced it with a pencil (preferable a blunt one to avoid piercing the draft)
- Did initial inking with a XS PITT pen to solidify the work, erased the pencils with a Staedlter Mars Plastic eraser (this almost always fades the black lines, which is okay because--)
- Inked again with a combination of different sized PITT pens and the Tachikawa for REALLY small details
- Laid down the leafing first (illuminating conventions say to leaf before "painting" because the gold may stick to the colors, which isn't a problem here but you know tradition)
- Colored in with the COPICS and the W&N Marker
- Did the final inking with the SpeedBall India ink because it's thicker and acts like paint, covering any creeping leaf and sharpening the outlines
- Added glitter with the Wink of Stella based on where Rarity's dress sparkles in the movie

Knowledge and Credits

- Studied the techniques and conventions used in real Illuminated Manuscripts from studying The Art of Calligraphy: A practical guide TO THE SKILLS and techniques by David Harris and Writing and Illuminating and Lettering by Edward Johnston
- Advice given by Professor Mark van Stone Ph.D., G.F. (who is awesome, did ya know he created the Pirate's Code book used in Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End and the Casper font?)
Comic Holder Cover - Celestia Regalia by BoxedSurprise
Comic Holder Cover - Celestia Regalia
A drawing I did to place on a friend's makeshift comic book holder (it's actually a special type of box for shipping comics, wanted to give it to my friend that needed it but it looked plain).

Come see the Apollo Pen here.

It's marvelous, and if you can support for the Tri-Scale, then at least go for the pen itself, sure you can just get a plastic technical pen but with this one you can adapt to the materials on hand, and adaptability is something I prize in anything. A pen that can use over 50+ refills with more being discovered and will withstand abuse, sounds nice, and it's true in the case of the Apollo Pen! Personally as an Engineer-in-training I'm in it for mostly the Tri-Scale, a pretty sick-looking architect's ruler that doubles as a case for up to three of the Apollo Pens.

Check out the stylus mod:

Comes in different finishes:
Black Stealth
Steampunk Brass (Production finish may vary slightly.)

Come on guys, help support the Apollo Pen! Make it a Christmas Present to a friend, co-worker, loved one, or hell, even yourself (pretty cool lookin' so why not right?)! If you can't really support it enough to receive even just the pen, then it'll be mighty appreciated if you spread the word!

Other than that, it's Finals Weeks so I'm very close to salvation, and will be "Awake" soon. And with the influx of new principal creative tools, I'm very eager to jot to paper my ideas. :)

...after recovering from a 12 hour flight because right after the last day of school, I'm headin' out to airport. Oh joy.

  • Mood: Tired
  • Listening to: "Kush" by Dr. Dre
  • Reading: A lot of textbooks
  • Watching: "Full House"
  • Playing: With my future if I don't finish this paper
  • Eating: Time by typing this journal
  • Drinking: Coffee, Milk, and Water.
